FAQ on 5010 Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA)

The following are some of the most common questions the EDI Support Services (EDISS) helpdesk receives regarding this requirement.

  • What is a 5010 Electronic Remittance Advice (i.e., ERA/Payment Advice/835 transaction)?
    The 5010 ERA is the electronic version of the paper Remittance Advice (RA). It explains to providers which claims paid and denied for each payment cycle. EDISS refers to it as either the ERA or the 835 transaction.

  • Once I am signed up for the ERA where do I log in to find it?
    Depending on your Connect registration, you may either get your ERA:
    • Direct utilizing a Network Service Vendor (NSV)
    • Through a billing service or clearinghouse

    Work with your NSV, billing service or clearinghouse for instructions on downloading your ERAs.

  • When will the ERA be available to download? Will I be notified that the ERA is available?
    5010 ERAs are delivered once a payment has been made. It is the responsibility of the facility to verify if an ERA is available to download.
     
  • Do I need software to view the ERA?
    Yes, you need a HIPAA-compliant software to translate the ERA. If you do not have one, EDISS offers the following for free:
    • PC-Print (For Medicare Part A ERAs)
    • Medicare Remit Easy Print (For Medicare Part B ERAs)
    • ABILITY|PC-ACE (For Medicare Part A, Part B and commercial ERAs)

ABILITY|PC-ACE is free software available for download on our website www.edissweb.com and has the functionality to translate the ERA. Please remember that prior to downloading, EDISS requires a Software Licensing Agreement be on file. For providers using other practice management software, please check with your software vendor to determine if your software can translate the ERA.
